Challenge Effects
Challenge effects are the text effects shown alongide three different icons (Mountain, Sun, or Crest) in colored bands (blue, orange, or red) on cards. These effects trigger during Step 5 of performing a test: Resolve Challenge Effects. These icons and colors correspond to those found on challenge cards.
On each challenge card revealed during a test, you’ll find one of three challenge icons on a band of color across the bottom: the Crest (red), the Mountain (blue), or the Sun (orange). These icons match those found next to challenge effects on cards in play.
After you resolve the effects of success or failure during Step 4 of performing a test, proceed to Step 5. During this step, you must resolve the instructions of each challenge effect matching the challenge icon drawn for the test that is shown on an active card in play.
Challenge effects on cards that were cleared or exhausted by the results of a test or another challenge effect do not trigger.
If harm or progress are placed by challenge effects on your turn, you are not considered to have placed those.
Some card effects may cause additional challenge effects to resolve. For example, you may be instructed to resolve challenge effects matching two or more challenge icons during the same test. When this happens, choose one icon and fully resolve the challenge effect process for it before moving on to the next. Resolve the full process for each icon in this way, one at a time.
Challenge Effect Order
When resolving challenge effects, resolve cards in the following order. When there are multiple challenge effects in one area, you can choose the order in which you resolve them.
- Weather cards
- Location card
- Mission cards
- Cards along the way
- Cards within reach
- Cards in your player area
Each challenge effect only resolves once per test. If for whatever reason, a card is in a position to resolve its challenge effect a second time during the same test, it does not do so.
If a card moves from the current area to an area for which the challenge effects have already been resolved this test (for example, while resolving cards within reach, a card is moved to along the way ), it does not resolve, as that area is already complete.
When you interact with a card within reach of another Ranger, you can choose which within reach area (yours or theirs) in which to resolve challenge effect first. Fully resolve all applicable challenge effects in that area before resolving challenge effects in the other within reach area.
Conditional Challenge Effects
Many challenge effects have additional conditions that determine whether or not they resolve. If a challenge effect contains a double-arrow icon (), you only resolve the text following the if you successfully execute all instructions preceding the icon, or if the condition preceding the icon is true. If you don't resolve the text after the , the challenge effect does not count as "resolving" for the purposes of other game effects.
