You attune to your intuition, feeling the thoughts and emotions of the spirit flowing toward you like an isolated river in search of the sea. He knows why you’ve come, and is willing to help. You close your eyes and take a slow, measured breath.

Deep recognition shudders through you. Your consciousness expands. You sense feelings that are not your own, and see far off visions of life in distant lands. You see the island far to the north, hovering over unfamiliar mountains. Thunder rolls, and the tang of ozone bites your nostrils.

You see Nimbus Station as it once was: fully functional and billowing white voluminous clouds in all directions. The regulator hums a calming tone. Power flows steadily into the enlivened machinery. You carefully calibrate the regulator. It must be perfect. Too little power will cause a shutdown. Too much and the regulator will overcharge, potentially destroying everything that five generations of your family had worked so hard to create. You breathe a sigh of relief. All systems are nominal.

It was your mission to keep the station running for one year; to steer it to the ragged edge of a faraway coast, then return. You see dark water roiling below—deeper and more powerful than any body of water you have ever seen. You see a barrage of lightning. Then the station’s navigational tower splits and crashes to the ground like a dead tree felled by a multitool. The station rises above the storm, sputters, and goes silent. Finally, you see the station drifting aimlessly. You have no means of correcting course and no means of returning to the surface.

You are adrift. Alone.

You open your eyes. Sweat beads on your forehead even though the air is frigid. You have no idea how much time has passed. You wrap your cloak around yourself and look for the spirit, but find nothing.

You know now what you must do. The storm regulator is malfunctioning, causing the station to generate a seemingly endless snow storm. If you can disrupt the power supply, that should allow you to engage the emergency regulator, and use it to decrease the intensity of the storm. Or you can overcharge the current and disable the station, which you can only assume will cause the storm to cease entirely. Either way, you need to act quickly, for the storm continues to worsen with each passing moment.
